Bristol Zoo Trip

During the Worcester week, we went to Bristol zoo to sketch animals. I know I wrote here many times that I can't sketch but I don't think I am getting better and it always disappoints me too much. I know I can't avoid sketching and doing is the only way to get better, but I always feel so bad after sketching.

Homework - charcoal

This homework was fun to do, because I finally had warmer hands and because it was smaller, I could have used eraser in pencil for details like eyes or lips and hair. A small complication was the mirror and light because in the halls I don't have an electricity outlet near the mirror and I can't move the mirror, so I had to use a really small mirror for portraits (credit to Kristina for lending me a mirror, I am really sorry she had to work with a mirror without proper light).

Touching my face wasn't the best idea...for my face.

I also have really small room and the mirror on the wall isn't big enough for the whole body. I had to stand really far away from the mirror and I still couldn't see my body properly. For the first figure drawing I was drawing my body separately from the bottom part of my leg (below the knee). For the last drawing I was sitting on my bedside drawers.

I don't like this one. It looks and is anatomically incorrect. One leg is too short and my ribs are really poking out this much but it looks bad in the picture.

My leg almost died during this drawing but it was funny.

Lesson 7 - framing

In this lesson, we learned about framing and composition. We watched a part of the film Rear Window and then we made storyboards where we had to focus on framing.

Lesson 5 - Leaf

For this task, we had to make an animation of a leaf in the wind. At first, I drew a trajectory of the leaf, which was very long and I had to draw 150 drawings to make this animation. I liked the trajectory and it was challenging so I decided to leave it as it was.

Then I drew few sketches of a rotating leaf and because I still wasn't sure how to rotate it, I made a leaf from a paper which helped me to see how the leaf can fly and move.

The final animation is not bad although I am not satisfied with everything. I wanted to make slow it down and speed it up, but I haven't made big enough loops to show proper timing. I used a technique called boiling for moves of the leaf on the ground. I quite like the part when the leaf is on the ground for the first time and I also like when it comes closer. The end could be slower but I ran out of paper.

I also coloured one side of the leaf black, because now it is more visible how the leaf is twisting.

Lesson 5 - Subtractive tone

In this lesson we were working with light and shadow. We covered whole paper with charcoal and then erased light parts. I have never shaded a drawing using this techniqe, so it was quite difficult for me and my cold hands were not working with plastic eraser very well. I am not really satisfied with my drawings, especially with the last one, which we were drawing only for 20 minutes (for other three drawings we had 40 minutes) and it looks really flat + the face is really creepy.

Homework - hands

When I found out that we had to draw hands for the homework, I was worried, because drawing hands was (and still is) one of my biggest struggles (with human figure of course).

We were supposed to draw hand holding different objects, so for my first drawing I chose a knife. I used black liner as a medium because I wanted to create more dramatic look.

I didn't know what to choose as a second objects, because I didn't want to draw the same objects as I had used for drawing negative space and still life self-portrait, and I don't have many things from home in the halls. I found a small glass bottle with crystals inside and I remembered Alice in Wonderland and I drew my hand holding the bottle with purple drink in it.

For next drawing of my hand holding a necklace I tried to use charcoal again. I am not good with charcoal because I am used to drawing details and charcoal doesn't work with details very well. That's why I am not satisfied with this one at all.

For the 4th drawing I used coloured pencils. It was too dark outside to draw it with natural light, so I challenged myself and tried to draw it with small yellow light. I am not sure if I like it, it's definitely not the best one but it was my first attempt to draw colours and shadows like this. I am also used do drawing with graphite/coloured pencils on smooth paper and this sketchbook has textured paper in it (I had had this problem with still life self-portrait too).

On my last picture I worked with Kristina (link here) because we thought it could be interesting to draw a hand holding another hand. I decided to use black liner and watercolours, but I needed to be careful, because my sketchbook's papier isn't for watercolurs. That's why it has only light shades and no dark shadows. I painted our hands with shades of blue, my hand is more purple-blue and Kristina's hand is more turqoise, so they match our hair colour. It was the most complicated drawing in this homework but I think it's my favourite one.

Homework - washing line

For the homework, we had to do a cycle of washing line. It was a pretty difficult task for me because I find drawing clothes very hard. I also had to draw the animation 2 times and I am still not really satisfied with the final animation.

The first animation turned out really bad because I hadn't planned it. I have not been used to planning my drawings and I usually forget to do it.

Then I decided to plan first and I drew sketches of a t-shirt and trousers.

The hardest thing to draw was the clothes because I have always struggled with drawing fabric and folds on the clothes. I also think it moves too fast, maybe it would be better if I added a few more frames but the final animation is definitely better than the first one.

Homework - The Accountant

For this homework we had to design a set for an office in a film The Accountant. I have decided to make an office in Heaven, where the accountant is an angel. It contrasts the office in Hell (CLICK HERE), which made my friend Kristina.
I made the office simple, because materialism is considered as a sin. I used light colours which match heaven and I also added a motivational quote with God.
It was really fun to do it, I think this is the first time I like my school work.

I was inspired by Naomi's office from Supernatural series, because she was an angel, but I wanted to make it lighter. I drew it in my graphic tablet. I also used three textures for rug, marble floor and clouds outside, because drawing it would take a long time.

Homework - colour

In this lesson we were talking about colours and how colour schemes can affect different emotions. For homework I had to find different colour schemes in an animated film. I have chosen a film "Up" by Pixar studios. It's one of my favourite animated films.

In the first picture they used an analougs colour scheme, which consists of colours that are on the same side of the colour wheel. There are different shades of brown, orange and yellow, which are made by light from the airship. They make kind and friendly mood, what leads us to think he is a good, trustworthy person.

In the second picture is used a complementary colour scheme consisting of greyish blue tones with red light. Blue tones show disappointment and the red light evokes anger. The character is shown in completely different light, now we can see how he really is.

This picture uses a triadic colour scheme of orange, green and blue tones. It's quite calming (blue tones), happy, kinda playful and childish. The grey old house is a little bit in a contrast, but it doesn't look scary.

The last picture also uses the triadic colour scheme with similar, but darker colours. Dark grey and rainy blue tones evokes Carl's tiredness and disappointment but yellow and red tones on Russel show us his optimism and passion.

Lesson 4 - Flag

In this lesson we learned about cycles and had to do a small practice task of a flag in the wind on 5 frames. It's not perfect and it's too fast, but I think 5 frames isn't enough to make the flag waving in normal speed. Overall, it's better than I expected and the flag is doing its movement almost like it should, even I didn't have any reference to it, which makes me happy.

Lesson 4 - Life Drawing

I am really enjoying these lessons, despite the fact that my back and legs always hurt so much. I think I still do more drawing than I should, but I don't know how to stop myself to planning as quickly as I do. I quite like these drawings (in the first drawing, the foot looks like a foot, I still can't believe it), except the last one. I have no idea why I couldn't draw it correctly, it always looked so bad. In the last 8 minutes I did a small sketch of it, because I didn't have enough time to start it all again, and it looks better, I think.
