Final Brief - Pixilation film Mortem Coniugum

As a final brief for my film module, I've been doing a short pixilation film. I was working on it with Kristína (we make a great team together as we have proven before). We had the same idea while we were talking about it after the lesson, so we simply decided to do it together. Our film is about Apocalypse, where a couple of messengers of death brings the apocalypse on the Earth.

The first thing we did was a beat board, which shows the key moments of the story.

In the first 8 pictures, you can see preparations for the apocalypse. Scenes of preparations will be in different order, because for example in the 4th picture is a summoning death ritual, which has to be one of the last scenes of preparations.

Next 6 pictures show us some scenes in the middle. After putting a gas mask on and going through the hallway there will be different scenes of ordinary people doing usual things before Christmas, like going out with their friends, shopping etc. In each scene there will be one of us in the gas mask, flashing for a moment. After these scenes, we will walk down the main square and then we will see the same scenes with people, but all the people will be dead.

The last 2 frames show us the end, where everyone is dead.

After the storyboard, we redrew all frames digitally and added more frames to create an animatic.
We decided to make the film only in black and white and we had to cut out the scene with the snake because we couldn't contact the owner.

From storyboard pictures we made an animatic, where we added the soundtrack which we created from different noises like a heartbeat, scratching, white noise, neon lamp or cello. Later there is the beginning of the song Path by Apocalyptica.

We were shooting the film in our hometown, Banská Bystrica, in Slovakia, because we know the location better and we knew how to get gas masks, a dog, a heart and blood and we know people who can help us.

For the heart scene we used a pig heart with fake blood. It was pretty messy and fun, when my neighborous walked around us.

For the water we used black food dye because we didn't want to do any harm to nature.

Kristina's dad was the only one who was willing to die on a grave. It was funny to shoot but people were looking at as very strangely.

The other day we were shooting the toast and masks scenes. Our friend Michal helped us with taking photos. For the toast, we couldn't find wine so we used Coca-Cola instead (which was great because I don't like wine or any other alcohol). Kristina was too small to be in the frame properly so we used my old Twilight series books as a little help to make her taller, which was really funny.

It was really cold so for testing shots we dressed up in bathrobes and my neighbours were really amused. But it helped us a bit against the freezing weather.

Shooting the summoning ritual and skulls was better because we could do it at home, so we weren't freezing. Although my sister was very surprised when she came home from school and found this.

Definitely the worst was shooting the scene on the main square. We were freezing to death and it took quite long to take all the pictures.

This is how you look during the winter in Slovakia.

Working with people was difficult. We didn't have enough people for the final scene and everyone was too frozen to be willing to play dead for longer time. Also, working with a dog who doesn't really understand what you need, wasn't easy. But after all, the film is better than I was worried it will be. So thanks to everyone who died for us in cold Banská Bystrica!

(We had so much fun)
